A Brief History of Living Water A Seventh-Day Adventist Congregation

In the summer of 1983, a small group of Seventh-Day Adventist Christians who were members of the Detroit Northwest SDA church and who resided in Southfield decided that the time had arrived to plant a SDA congregation in the city of Southfield. The Emmanuel Lutheran Church at Lahser Road and 9 Mile graciously consented to rent their church facility to the SDA group for their weekly Sabbath worship meetings.

The group was initially shepherded by a pastor Alvinus Bola, a seminary student and candidate for the PhD Degree at Andrews University, Berrien Springs, Michigan. Under his leadership, the membership grew. The church drew new members from the community as well as from northwest Detroit. The church chose as its name: The Seventh-Day Adventist Church of Southfield.

In 1985, the SDA Church of Southfield was formally accepted into the sisterhood of Churches that formed the Lake Region Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. At this point pastor Bola was succeeded by pastor Lester Parkinson by appointment of the Lake Region Conference.

The Church experienced modest but steady growth as the years went by with many of the new members being SDA Christians - singles and families – who had newly moved to Southfield or other northwest suburbs.

In addition to its evangelistic ministry, the church’s ministry to the community over the years included: organized visitation of shut-ins at area nursing homes, health seminars and health fairs, cooking classes, distribution of Thanksgiving food baskets to needy Southfield families, preparing and serving Thanksgiving diner at the church facility to local families and shut-ins. In addition, the church has for several years maintained a feeding schedule for the homeless in the Cass Corridor and at the Yarba Hotel in Detroit. At Christmas time, the Church prepares hundreds of personal care packages for distribution to the homeless at these two locations.

In 1998, the church gave birth to a second congregation, The Community SDA Church of Southfield that meets for worship at the Congregational Church located on Southfield Road midway between 11 and 12 Mile Roads in Lathrup Village.

Seven years ago, the SDA church of Southfield was blessed by God to acquire the property (approximately 4 acres) immediately to the north of EMC. The church desired to build its own church home – not just a place of worship but also a place to facilitate a more effective ministry to its neighbors and the larger community. The current pastor, Pastor William E. Hughes has provided the leadership to make this desire and dream a reality.
